Bakelite was designated an ACS National Historical Chemical Landmark in recognition of its significance as the world's first synthetic plastic. Bakelite has become a sought after collectible and because it has become common for many people to classify all early plastic as Bakelite, experienced collectors have developed ways to test Bakelite for authenticity.

The testing method we use is the "Semichrome" test. This is where Semichrome, (a non abrasive metal polish) is applied with a soft cloth to a place on the backside of the jewelry. If it is Bakelite, the cloth will turn yellow no matter what color the jewelry. We have been successful with this test and it has proved not to cause damage to the Bakelite.
